Gravity Switch/Laconia @ Tap & Spile, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne 28/06/02
We stumbled across this gig completely by accident, and were amazed by the sound of both bands playing (there was another band played that night, but we had places to be, so were unable to hang about long enough to catch any of them
Despite being a very small, and poorly ventilated venue, both bands played remarkable sets, Gravity Switch, up first, not intimidated by the proximity of the audience, which can phase many bands, played four songs. The sound, which has been described as the Bangles with a bit of Muse thrown in, grabs you by the collars, and makes you listen, the vocals powerful, yet subtle in their expression, fantastic!
Laconia took to the stage second (maybe third, – we don’t really know), and instantly blew me away. The execution flawless, the power and energy translating well in the small room, there was even a bit of showmanship from guitarist, as he played one of the songs half way up the stairs, which must have been nigh on impossible, considering the volume of the karaoke upstairs! The sound of these guys was mainly punky emo, but it was awesome!
